No Personal Profiles Please

So having a Facebook business page is too hard.  You think it will just try and set up a personal page and use it for your business?   More people will see your posts right? And you’ll get that all important engagement.  No wait stop! Please don’t!

Here are some of the reasons it is not a good idea.

Facebook Rules

It is completely against Facebook rules – They will delete your page if they notice, they might be nice and ask you to change it.  Imagine building up a following of 500 or even 5000 to lose it all and once you get successful that’s exactly what will happen.

Put your friends at risk

It puts your friends at risk.  Profiles (your personal or friends page) behave very differently to pages (your business or professional page).  On your personal page as you are friends with everyone Facebook shares more of your information the option of share with friends of friends allows for a wider reach.  If your friend is running a business and using a personal profile, allowing every Tom Dick and Harry to friend them, then Tom Dick and Harry and whoever else has access to all your friends of friend’s information.

I’m sure you agree people put lots of personal stuff on their Facebook page.  Sometimes waay too personal but I’m not going to get into that just now.  Safe to say you don’t want to be the one who allows some dodgy stranger to see your cousin’s entire dance school class photos and information.

It makes you look unprofessional and small

Big names in your industry wouldn’t consider using a personal profile.  They would take the time and learn what to do.  You should too.  Yes, it’s a big harder to get engagement and have your post seen but it is well worth the effort.  You will be playing by the rules, keeping people safe and look like a business going places.

Finally, it will give you access to tools like audience insights, allow you to run competitions and create Facebook ads.
